Dog Manners Classes

For pet owners who want basic "Doggie Manners" for their pet, KerrKlickers offers two levels of Dog Manners classes, Dog Manners I and Dog Manners II.  Dog Manners I is a 5 week class, Dog Manners II is a 4 week class.  The format of each class session is a mixture of demonstration, discussion, and practice of the techniques with the dog.  Special needs of the students and their dogs will also be addressed

Owners are expected to practice with their dogs between classes.  It is recommended that they spend at least 15 minutes with their pet twice a day .

  • Manners I (See Details)
    • Training Behaviors You Want  - pay attention to your owner, sit, down, come, wait, leave items alone, walk easily on a loose leash, basic targeting skills and simple tricks.

  • Manners II (See Details)     (for those who want to polish current behaviors and add some additional skills)
    • This class will build on the skills developed in Dog Manners I. The basic behaviors (sit, pay attention, down, wait, walk, come, leave-it) will be polished.  The following new behaviors will be introduced: targeting, stand, give, take, backup, scent discrimination and some fun tricks.

    • Prerequisite: Dog Manners I or permission of the KerrKlickers trainer.

Canine Good Citizen Prep Class

What is an AKC Canine Good Citizen?   A Canine Good Citizen is a friendly, well-behaved dog that we can take virtually anywhere without risk or bother to others -- a dog who behaves well in a crowd, has good manners when guests visit our home, is reliable around children, and who doesn't lunge, bark at, or threaten other dogs or passersby.

This class will focus on teaching/strengthening the behaviors that are necessary for a dog to pass the 10 tests required for Canine Good Citizen Certification from the American Kennel Club.  This certification is available for any dog that is able to pass the 10 tests.  The dog does not need to be pure-bred to earn a Canine Good Citizen Certification from AKC.

Each of the behaviors needed to pass the tests will be introduced and methods for teaching the behavior will be covered.  Students will practice with their dogs during the class period.  All students are expected to attend the first 4 weeks of the class.  Additional sessions will be on a "drop-in" basis until the dog is prepared to pass the testing for certification.

Prerequisite: Dog Manners II or permission of the KerrKlickers trainer.

Canine Freestyle

Canine Freestyle is a sport where the handler "dances" with his/her dog.  Each routine uses music selected by the handler to suit the dog, is choreographed by the handler to fit the styles and capabilities of the dog and handler, and is lots of fun for both -- fun in training and fun in performing.

This class teaches the basic skills needed to allow a dog and owner to compete in Canine Freestyle competitions and to do exhibitions of freestyle.  The class addresses selecting music, deciding on the type of routine (real dance or skit), teaching the necessary "tricks" to the dog so that it can perform with its handler, and choreographing the dance routine.  It is also a class where the dog and handler can enjoy working together even if they never compete or do any exhibitions for others (although once the "bug" bites, most handlers perform at least for their friends).

This class is ongoing.

Prerequisite: Dog Manners II or permission of the KerrKlickers trainer.
