“Dog Manners II”

This class will build on the skills developed in Dog Manners I. The basic behaviors (sit, pay attention, down, wait, walk, come, leave-it, basic targeting) will be polished.   Dogs will also learn more advanced skills.

The new behaviors taught are:

Advanced Targeting

The dog will learn to touch other objects on command, to touch a 'target stick', to follow a hand or target stick, to go to an object to touch it. Both nose and body targeting will be covered.  Targeting is an essential skill for dogs who will compete with their owners in Agility, Rally, Obedience, or Freestyle.

Stand

The dog will learn to stand up on command and to maintain the stand for a short period of time.  This behavior is utilized at the groomers (or at home if the owner is grooming his own dog) and at the veterinarians.  It is also used in Rally and Obedience.

Back-Up

The dog will learn to back up (away from the owner or in a reverse direction from the direction in which the dog is moving).  This behavior is important in households with the elderly as the dog can be asked to get "out of the way".  It is also utilized in Rally, Obedience, and Freestyle.

Give

The dog learns to give, to his owner, an object the dog is holding in his mouth.  Teaching a dog to 'give' can make playing fetch with the dog much more pleasant for the owner; it also stops the 'chase me, I've got it' behavior.  Fetching is also a part of advanced Obedience exercises.

Take

The dog learn to take hold of an object the owner offers (take hold in his mouth).  With the 'take' behavior, most dogs can be taught to play fetch even if they are not naturally inclined to do so.

Scent Discrimination

The dog will learn to use its nose to discover the freshest scent.  Teaching a dog to use its nose for scenting can be used for "parlor" tricks, for advanced Obedience work, for Tracking, and for other types of work that involves scenting.

Fun Tricks

Using the behaviors taught in Dog Manners II, your dog can be taught to do lots of fun tricks (e.g. roll over, play dead, crawl, spin, bounce).
